Medal Bar of Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir John Salmond
Sir John Salmond served in both the British Army and the Royal Air Force. In 1930 he succeeded Lord Trenchard as Chief of the Air Staff of the RAF.
Sir John was commissioned into the British Army in 1901, joining the Royal Flying Corps in 1912. He held many commands, both at home and overseas, before being appointed Chief of the Air Staff in 1930. In 1933 his brother, Air Chief Marshal Sir Geoffrey Salmond, took over but died after just 27 days in post. Sir John had to briefly resume the post once more.
