Browning, 0.303in, Mk. II*
The Browning machine gun was adopted by the RAF following trials in 1934. Although the gun was selected, work was needed to make it suitable for use with British ammunition.
Changes were made in time for the Browning to be adopted in many of the new aircraft types selected for the Royal Air Force, including fighters such as the Supermarine Spitfire and bombers such as the Armstrong Whitworth Whitley. It was fitted to most aircraft types used by the RAF during the Second World War. Over 500,000 complete guns and spares were manufactured by BSA and their sub-contractors.
