London Aerodrome

Small carved rectangular wooden shield with shaped, inscribed gold plaque at the front. Folding wooden stand at rear. Smaller than the later variety of London Aerodrome Trophy with large circular central plaque. Hallmarked 9ct gold embossed award plaque mounted on stained wooden stand with folding out backrest held on by two metal screws. Plaque secured by four turned pins held on by knurled flat brass washers, (one only present, three missing). Inscribed: "The London Aerodrome Trophy (raised block), Presented to Gustave Hamel in commemoration of his flight as a competitor in the first aerial derby June 8th 1912. (engraved block). The plinth depicts a raised coastline, with an engraving to the left of an early monoplane with pilot. To the left is a classical female Goddess of Flight figure holding out a laurel wreath with her left hand, and supporting a Christian cross with her right hand, the cross also has laurels surrounding it.
