London Aerodrome
Aircraft & Exhibits, In Storage, 1995/0855/C
Mounted on a wooden shield, a large circular sterling silver medallion of a draped female figure of Victory extending a wreath above a Bleriot style monoplane. Scenic background with racing pylon, clouds and the arms of the City of London. Sterling silver raised award plaque mounted on stained wooden shield. The paque is secured by three silver metal turned pins connecting with three brass turned heads. There remains the top part and hinge of a wooden stand, the bottom part is missing. Two hooks and eyes have been screwed into the rear with a twisted metal wire threaded through indicating that at some time the plaque has been hung on a wall. The trophy is inscribed: The London Aerodrome Trophy (raised block), presented to J.D. North by the directors of the Grahame White Aviation co. Ld. Hendon, in appreciation of his services as Chief Engineer December 1914 (in block). The plinth depicts a classical female figure to the left holding out a laurel wreath supporting her right arm on a Greco/roman column also bedecked with laurel wreaths. To the right there is a Christian cross with laurels and above that pressed out in the metal there is a timing tower, the outline of what appear to be hangers, and a depiction of an early monoplane. A makers/ manufacturers stamp shows the artists name 'G. Halliday' at the base of the plaque.
