Long, brown leather coat, the front of double flap construction buttoning with six buttons concealed in a fly on the right side. The collar cut deep at the back and lower at the front with a cross-over flap and two buttons to enable it to be fastened as a standing collar round the neck. Single large flapped pocket below waist on left side fastening with press studs. Large, diagonal map pocket without flap on chest with opening on right. Sleeves ending in wrist bands with press stud closure. Broad leather waist belt with pin buckle, the holes reinforced with metal eyelets. Lined throughout, including collar, in camel coloured woollen fabric. Small internal breast pocket. The inside of the skirts fitted with leather straps with press studs to secure round the legs in inclement weather. Condition - the leather supple. Slight damage across shoulders.

Single-breasted, waist-length blue-grey serge jacket closing with four pierced black plastic buttons which button through and are not concealed in a fly. The garment intended to be buttoned to the top and the collar fastened with a hook and eye. Pleated and flapped breast pockets closed with the same, visible buttons which also appear on the cuffs. The waistband narrowing into a belt extension which engages with a black lacquered buckle on right side which has a retaining loop behind it. The waistband pierced with two button holes at the back and one in the front to secure the jacket to the trousers with which it is supposed to be worn. No shoulder straps. The collar fitted with white gorget tabs and the tops of the sleeves bearing UNIVERSITY OF LONDON AIR SQUADRON badges.

RFC, Cowl Type, Ptn 1916

Cowl type helmet substantially modified. Very pale brown, washed out, leather hood with face aperture. The draw string connected to a buckled strap which normally passes round rear of head completely removed. Helmet lined in chamois at the crown and in skirts, and in fur (all missing) at neck, ears and forehead. No ear flaps but six holes, two rows of three, pierced at sides but wind deflectors removed. Adjustable leather straps with buckles at upper, outer corners of aperture. The rear half of the skirt covering the back of the neck completely removed and the edge neatly turned up and machine stitched. The centre front of the skirt having two short vertical cuts, as if to take a strap, but none present. It is not clear whether these modifications are contemporary or a later adaptation to convert the helmet for another purpose. Condition - poor but displayable if required.

Slight damage in centre of upper skirts, across shoulders and at centre rear of collar. Fair, displayable.

Dark blue battledress style jacket closing to the neck with six concealed buttons and a stand-fall collar closing with one hook. The internal facing to the top two buttons made of serge not cotton and thereby allowing them to be left open and the upper part turned back as a sort of lapel showing the same colour as the rest of the garment. Buttoned cuff bands. The waistband extending into a belt and fastening with a black japanned buckle. Buttoned shoulder straps fastening with a black plastic button bearing CD below a King's crown. Two breast pockets closing with a buttoned flap, the buttons concealed. Both upper sleeves bear the heraldic badge of the North Riding of Yorkshire. Shoulder straps bear single broad yellow transverse bars. Left breast pocket bears the Civil Defence Corps badge with NORTH RIDING in yellow on a curved patch below. Above this pocket the ribbons to the Defence and War Medals.
