Auxiliary Fire Service Jacket

Double-breasted, long skirted tunic type jacket with a stand collar open in front. Shoulder straps. Six pairs of buttons at front - plated 'silver' with AFS in relief - two in the small of the back above a box pleat in the skirt, and on the shoulder straps. Plain sleeves, no cuff. The shoulder straps furnished with two transverse strips of scarlet melton cloth indicating a Section Leader. Lined in coarse black woollen fabric in the body, black cotton in the skirts and white woollen fabric in the sleeves. Condition - good, but buttons and collar hooks corroded and the lining becoming unstitched. Two buttons missing.
Royal Air Force Prisoners of War Association Memorial Plaque

Memorial to the 50 PoWs shot after the 'Great Escape' from Stalag Luft III in March 1944. Rectangular memorial plaque with glass fronted deep wooden frame, topped by a brass eagle with outstretched wings. Features Royal Air Force Prisoners of War Association badge at the centre with RAF, Fighter Command and Bomber Command Association badges and RCAF, RAF, RNZAF and RAAF pilot's wings and central plaque inscribed 'Look at this Friend. Take the Freedom they strove to Give You and be in their debt.' Smaller individual name plaques bearing the names of those shot.
Distinguished Flying Cross

A silver cross with bifurcated and curled ends bearing flaming grenades, overlaid vertically with a two-blade propeller and horizontally with a pair of wings. The centre medallion composed of a laurel wreath overlaid by a crowned Tudor rose bearing, centrally, RAF in monogram. The top branch without a grenade, fashioned with a decorative shape and loop for suspension. An intermediate ring connects to a plain suspender bar with laurel leaves below pierced to receive the intermediate ring. Reverse - Within a ring GRI 1918. Engraved at the bottom of the cross the date of award - 1943. Ribbon - white and purple in thin diagonal lines.

Single-breasted, waist-length jacket with buttons concealed in fly to neck, stand and fall collar fastening with hooks, shoulder straps, buttoned cuffs. Flapped pleated breast pockets with concealed button. Waistband with belt extension to a metal buckle. Buttonholes inside waistband to engage with buttons on waistband of trousers. Rank insignia SAY WHERE AND IN WHAT FORM. Pilot's Air Gunner's Navigator's Observer's Signaller's Bomb Aimer's DELETE AS APPROPRIATE flying badge above left breast pocket. Mention any medal ribbons which may be below the flying badge. Pale blue shoulder eagles printed on black cotton patches on shoulders. (Delete as appropriate) Rank .... Flying badges ...
Parachute Harness, RAF, Chest Type

Complex arrangement of straps comprising a body harness with two lift webs terminating in large snap hooks which are positioned on the chest. The body harness made up of four adjustable straps ending in connectors a seat strap and a loop passing between the legs. Two straps pass over the shoulders and two over the thighs, through the loop, and all four clip into a quick release connector box positioned on the lower chest. The harness is fitted with a back pad for comfort. Two square metal loops attached to the seat strap are fitted for the attachment of a dinghy pack which acts as a cushion.
Victoria Cross of Sergeant John Hannah

Dark patinated bronze cross pattée with a semi-circular extension on the upper arm bearing a ring which engages with a V below the suspension bar which is decorated with two sprays of laurel leaves joined by a ribbon. Obverse - a crown with crowned lion above and below a sroll bearing the words FOR VALOUR. The cross edged with a double line border. Reverse - The cross edged with a double line border and a double lined central disc bearing an engraved date 15TH SEPT 1940 . The reverse of the suspension bar engraved 652918 SGT. J. HANNAH. 83 SQ. R.A.F. Ribbon - maroon.
RAF, Type G Oxygen Mask

Grey-green rubber face cup, the inner edge lined in suede, shaped so as to fit over the nose and chin. Below the chin an oval-section extension housing the expiratory valve and the oxygen supply inlet which bifurcates and is carried into the upper part of the mask in ducts fashioned within the wall of the mask. Inspiratory valve in lower left cheek. Above the oval extension, a large circular central aperture housing the microphone which is clamped in by a wire ring and sealed with a rubber collar. Around the oval extension, and attached by brackets to the microphone clamp ring, an adjustable, cotton webbing suspension harness terminating on the left in a leather pad with three female press studs and on the right with a single strap and a metal loop. The press studs engage with male studs on the left side of the helmet and the loop engages with a flat hook attached to the right side. A connecting cable and plug emerge from the bottom of the microphone casing. A copper wire held in loops cast into the rubber of the mask, is positioned across the nose to ensure a snug fit in that area. Oxygen pipe of black, corrugated rubber with plastic upper end to screw into the inlet and yellow alloy lower end to connect to aircraft oxygen supply system. Lower end fitted with bulldog clip to attach to harness or clothing to stop the weight of the supply pipe dragging the mask off the face.

RAF Type B flying helmet, John Hannah

Dark brown leather helmet lined throughout in chamois, with a brown velvet brow band. Circular leather telephone holders with vertical zips, fitted internally with a plastic telephone cup and, usually, containing moulded foam rubber telephone pads. Inside the helmet, padded chamois ear cushions. On either side of the face aperture a pair of female press studs, facing inwards, intended for the attachment of the D Type oxygen mask. Leather chin strap with metal tip on right which engages with a quick release buckle on left. The rear of the helmet gussetted for several inches to allow adjustment and with a tightening strap running around the back. Short, buckled vertical strap in centre, lower rear for retaining goggles. Showing signs of burn damage acquired during the exploit for which Hannah was awarded the Victoria Cross.
