USAAF Memorial Stone

Large grey granite memorial stone dedicated to those personnel of the USAAF 8th Air Force who served in the UK 1942-1945. Rectangular base on granite plinth; raised central portion featuring USAAF badge and engravings of appropriate aircraft.

On a shield shaped patch of dark grey fabric embroidered in pale blue the outline of a shield within which a sword points downwards. Superimposed over the whole an eagle flying to the wearers left clutching a swastika. Mounted to card.

War Medal 1939-1945

Circular, silver with plain bar suspender. Obverse - Crowned profile of KGVI, left side. Around rim GEORGIUS VI D: G: BRO: OMN: REX ET INDIAE: IMP: Reverse - A lion trampling on a two headed monster with, above, 1939 1945. Ribbon - red, white and blue in narrow stripes.

Standard large commercial saloon car restored to represent an RAF vehicle. Pronounced rear body curve with integral boot and chrome wheel discs and front and rear bumpers and leather bench seats in the saloon front and rear.

RAF Type B flying helmet, John Hannah

Dark brown leather helmet lined throughout in chamois, with a brown velvet brow band. Circular leather telephone holders with vertical zips, fitted internally with a plastic telephone cup and, usually, containing moulded foam rubber telephone pads. Inside the helmet, padded chamois ear cushions. On either side of the face aperture a pair of female press studs, facing inwards, intended for the attachment of the D Type oxygen mask. Leather chin strap with metal tip on right which engages with a quick release buckle on left. The rear of the helmet gussetted for several inches to allow adjustment and with a tightening strap running around the back. Short, buckled vertical strap in centre, lower rear for retaining goggles. Showing signs of burn damage acquired during the exploit for which Hannah was awarded the Victoria Cross.

Mk XIV Bombsight, Sighting Head and Control Panel

Black crackle painted cylinder shaped gyro unit bolted in an anti-vibration frame and fitted with an optical sighting head. All mounted onto a large base fitted with electrical lead with socket and adjustable (airframe) bracket. Complete with switch box.

Winch, (C Class Flying Boat)

Large, silver painted, tubular framed hand operated cable winch for hauling in refuelling hose to the receiving aircraft; carried by C Class flying boat during flight refuelling experiments. Red painted side crank handle operating drum via large red painted chain wheel. Brake pressure gauge mounted on front of unit. Yellow knobbed release lever at front.

RAF Irvin jacket, John Hannah

Fleece-lined, brown leather short jacket with full length zip closure and zips running up front of fore-arms. Around the bottom front, a leather half belt emerging from the side seams, fitted with a white metal buckle. On the underside of the collar a fastening loop and a strap to hold the collar up when worn in that position.
