Gosport Tubes

A pair of cotton covered rubber (?) tubes joined at the lower end into a single white alloy connector and terminating at the upper ends in chrome plated tubes which connect to perforated circular shallow, plastic cups held against the ears inside a flying helmet. Sound is transmitted accoustically into a speaking trumpet connected to the lower end and thereby to the wearer's ears.

Consists of a steel rod bearing a joint piece which carries another rod bent at 90 degrees. the latter has two brass callipers attached to it with screw clamps. Central rod has bakelite handle bound in brass.

Flying Helmet

Brown leather helmet lined in chamois and with velvet brow band and chin strap lining. The ear positions pierced with a large hole fitted with a black plastic ring-housing for Gosport tubes. An adjustable elastic tightening strap threaded between the outer layer and the lining passes across the back of the helmet at low ear level. Adjustment is by a tiny hook on right side. Vertical buckled goggles retaining strap centre rear. Chin strap on right engages with leather-covered buckle on left. This example fitted with Gosport tubes. Condition - good, displayable but the foam rubber padding obviously hardened and fragmenting.

Cotton-covered, domed cork helmet with broad brim, pointed at the front and square at the back, having a domed ventilator button in the top. Leather chin strap. The interior fitted with a leather head band. Large pugaree with RAF flash on the left.

Heated Goggles

Brown leather oval mask including nose cover retaining pear-shaped, assymetrical yellow alloy frames lacquered black, on spring loaded, fabric-covered sides with clear windows, hinged on centre line. Sandwiched between the layers of safety glass an electrical heating filament which is connected to terminals positioned on the top of the frames close to the central hinge. Lining fur, the edges of the frames covered in chenille padding. Brown elastic, adjustable head strap. With modern presentation case. In fitted wooden case with red padding.
