Flying Helmet Type C

Brown leather helmet lined in chamois constructed in strips passing from front to rear of the wearer's head with a brow band, lined in velvet. Fitted with circular, black rubber telephone holders. Connector Type 2808 combined microphone and telephone wiring attached to the centre rear of the helmet and is then fed through press studded tabs and channels to the earphones and to a microphone plug below the left ear. Three male press studs on left side of face aperture for connection of Type G/H Oxygen mask. Right side fitted with hook to receive loop from mask harness. Centre rear fitted with short buckled strap to retain goggles strap. Two vertical leather tabs sewn at top and with press studs at bottom placed behind telephone holders to steady goggles strap. This example fitted with jack plug.

Long, thin and very flexible perforated metal strip consisting of three different sections riveted together. Various fixing holes and circular end cut-outs. Painted in red lead all over. Part of a collection of components of varying size of original RAFM ex Nash Collection Bleriot XI, comprising three wing ribs (Originally 72/A/840 A,B,C) two undercarriage cross frames, (D,E) one main leg (F), one undercarriage cross frame metal strip, (G) two undercarriage leg ties (H,J), and bundle of three landing wires (K,K,M). All complete with some evidence of earlier repairs. A mix of wood and metal components, the wooden ones being shaped and jointed.

Three-handled mug features three distinct white reliefs on blue jasper. A memorial plaque inscribed with the wording “R J Mitchell (1895-1937) of Stoke-on-Trent. Designer of the Spitfire”. An image of Spitfire set within laurel wreath and the city of Stoke-on-Trent coat of arms again set within laurel wreath. The bottom rim is decorated with a laurel border and the three handles feature a decoration of acanthus leaves which sites above a small raised line which runs around items circumference. Interior decoration in gold depicts the Royal Air force motto “PER ARDUA AD ASTRA”. Body is made from jasper which has been left unglazed.
