The Enigma Machine

Build 1. Portable encoding machine, in rectangular wooden case with hinged lid. The main unit has letters on push-down keys forming a typewriter like keyboard and a photocopy of the operating manual, plus the original printed operating instructions, in German, inside the wooden lid, partly covered by a detachable transparent green plastic cover. Row of 10 light bulbs along top inner edge of lid. Drop down lid at front to access plugs which plug into numbered and lettered sockets. One lid hinge detached and with copy instruction manual.
RAF Central Band Full Dress Helmet

Oval-shaped, blocked headdress covered with rabbit fur dyed black and bearing across the front a plaited gold and dark blue cord suspended from two small uniform buttons. On the inside these buttons secure the attachment points of the gilt metal chin chain. The front of the headdress decorated with the large Bandsman's gold wire embroidered cap badge and, fitted behind it, a bright, mid-blue nylon hackle with gold braid round the point at which the nylon ends and the fixing blade begins.

Stiffened panel covered in crimson Melton cut pointed at the inner end and straight at outer end which bears one stripe of normal width pale blue lace and one stripe of narrow lace for a Matron in Chief. The buttonhole, a brass tube designed to take a threaded post button. The underside lined in black cotton and with a full length narrow black leather strap intended to pass through loops on he shoulders of the cape and pierced at the pointed end to receive the threaded post button.

Khaki serge jacket with lapel extending fully to right shoulder and fastening with concealed horn buttons; shoulder straps and horizontal, inset pockets with flaps all fastened with visible, small horn buttons. No tabs on cuffs. The fall part of the collar closes edge to edge with hooks and eyes. The front lower opening fitted with a press stud to keep it closed across the upper legs. The sleeves, chest and shoulders lined, but the lower part unlined. Short vent at centre rear. With shoulder-titles - ROYAL FLYING CORPS - embroidered off-white on black.

Reversing stop watch, designed for use with equal distance bomb sight. Believed only five remaining in the country. Stop watch with grey metal case and white face. Showing reverse dial, numbered 1 - 14. Black metal needle with teardrop tip. Face inscribed with "Reversing Stop Watch for equal distance bomb sight height in thousands of feet Mark II" as well as the maker's name. Watch has red marker. There are two metal switches at the top and a metal attachment for a strap.

Laser guided 2,000 lb high penetration bomb based around BLU-109 high explosive bomb. Painted dark green overall with blue nose band and white stencilled 'inert bomb' front and rear. Green/brown bodied detachable laser guidance head with perspex nose cone and four fixed fins; at rear of bomb are mounted four spring loaded fins/wings that deploy when the weapon is dropped. There are four brass screw type carrying lug attachments along the top of the main bomb body. Rear mounted standard No.960 Mk.2 fuze.

Long grey rectangular camera body. Slide-in type rear film magazine (now missing), which held six 9x12cm plates. Pistol grip and trigger at rear operating inner shutter, polished wooden secondary grip towards the front; collapsible pivoting fore and hinged aft sights on top of body; Film feed at rear. No lens, but all fixing screws remain in situ at the front. Control knob and film counter on right hand end side. Doped canvas body wrapping slightly detached at bottom.

Originally Original nacelle framework only; later fully restored and completed and incorporated into completely reconstructed FE.2b aircraft for display at RAFM Hendon. Firing pin in the machine gun mounted in the front gunners position (Lewis machine gun. The aircraft is suspended in H2 so is impossible to get to without height access equipment so is safe for now but if the aircraft is lowered care needs to be taken as it is a fully live weapon capable of firing ammunition.
