Parachute Harness, RAF, Chest Type

Complex arrangement of straps comprising a body harness with two lift webs terminating in large snap hooks which are positioned on the chest. The body harness made up of four adjustable straps ending in connectors a seat strap and a loop passing between the legs. Two straps pass over the shoulders and two over the thighs, through the loop, and all four clip into a quick release connector box positioned on the lower chest. The harness is fitted with a back pad for comfort. Two square metal loops attached to the seat strap are fitted for the attachment of a dinghy pack which acts as a cushion.

Grey khaki, long-sleeved, single breasted coatfrock with detachable pointed brown or white collar. Open down front from neck for 21½ inches, closing with 6 buttons, 5 large 1 small. 2 inch grey-khaki belt sewn to back closing with four button holes and secured at waist level by two offset buttons attached to the front of the coat. Two patch pockets in skirt, 5 inches below belt line, closing with a buttoned flap. 3 inch buttoned cuffs with 6 inch opening. Shoulder straps bearing WAAC title and coloured centre stripe sewn to shoulder seam and secured at the top by a button. See his historical notes.

Distinguished Flying Cross of Flight Lieutenant Peter Charles Fasken Stevenson

A silver cross with bifurcated and curled ends bearing flaming grenades, overlaid vertically with a two-blade propeller and horizontally with a pair of wings. The centre medallion composed of a laurel wreath overlaid by a crowned Tudor rose bearing, centrally, RAF in monogram. The top branch without a grenade, fashioned with a decorative shape and loop for suspension. An intermediate ring connects to a plain suspender bar with laurel leaves below pierced to receive the intermediate ring. Reverse - Within a ring GRI 1918. Engraved at the bottom of the cross the date of award - 1940. Ribbon - white and purple in thin diagonal lines.

Flying Helmet Type E

Buff coloured, cotton Aertex fabric helmet constructed in strips passing from front to rear of the wearer's head with a brow band lined in felt. Fitted with circular, black rubber telephone holders, the inner portions of which are lined in chamois leather. Three male and two female press studs on both sides of face aperture for connection of Type D or E*/G Oxygen. Centre rear fitted with short buckled strap to retain goggles strap. Two vertical leather tabs sewn at top and with press studs at bottom placed behind telephone holders to steady goggles strap. Elasticated chin strap fixed but adjustable at left with press-stud fastening at right.
