Cowl Type, Ptn 1916, Converted

Aircraft & Exhibits, In Storage, 70/U/479

A substantially modified cowl type helmet converted to a cap type and further adapted for wireless telephony. Brown leather cap type helmet lined in chamois in the crown and in fur below the eye line and across the forehead (fur mostly missing). No turned up peak. The rear and front skirts of the cowl have been neatly cut away, turned and machine sewn, retaining extensions to pass under the chin. The right side fitted with a short, narrow fastening strap and the left with an over-size brass buckle with roller and pin. The strap passes through a retaining loop before reaching the buckle. The ear flaps, wind deflectors and face aperture tightening cord removed. The two buckled brow tightening straps retained. The ear flap holes have been greatly enlarged and provided externally with leather telephone pockets which are only accessible from the inside. On the outer ends of the pockets, centrally on the forehead and at the two rear sides are flat leather loops, probably intended for the retention of an elastic head band intended to hold the telephones firmly over the ears. Condition - Very poor, the leather extremely dry and creased though still flexible. All of the fur/sheepskin (?) has shed its pile, fragments only remaining. The chamois lining heavily soiled. Displayable with care after conservation.

Aircraft & Exhibits, In Storage, 1986/0612/U

Cowl type helmet substantially modified. Very pale brown, washed out, leather hood with face aperture. The draw string connected to a buckled strap which normally passes round rear of head completely removed. Helmet lined in chamois at the crown and in skirts, and in fur (all missing) at neck, ears and forehead. No ear flaps but six holes, two rows of three, pierced at sides but wind deflectors removed. Adjustable leather straps with buckles at upper, outer corners of aperture. The rear half of the skirt covering the back of the neck completely removed and the edge neatly turned up and machine stitched. The centre front of the skirt having two short vertical cuts, as if to take a strap, but none present. It is not clear whether these modifications are contemporary or a later adaptation to convert the helmet for another purpose. Condition - poor but displayable if required.
