Small wooden trunk painted black with an oval cartouche on the lid showing a B.E.2c with the legend No. 3 SQUADRON, ST. OMER 1/2/17 and, on the front, RFC wings and 2/LIEUT. F.L. CARTER RFC. With handles at both ends and lock hasp and staple.
Cowl Type, Ptn 1916, Converted

Helmet substantially modified to convert it from a cowl type into a cap type helmet. Brown leather cap type helmet lined in chamois at the crown and in fur at neck, ears and forehead. Ear flaps, covering single, large round hole, pierced by nine holes arranged in a circle, retained by press studs: the flaps having cylindrical wind deflectors on their front, vertical edge. Adjustable leather straps with buckles at upper, outer corners of aperture. A chin strap (right) and buckle (left) added at the lower front corners. One small pin buckle with roller sewn on each side immediately below the wind deflectors and positioned at an angle for the attachment of oxygen and/or microphone mask.. Condition -good, worn, dirty but displayable.

Brown leather cap type helmet lined in woollen cloth in the crown and in fur below the eye line including the peak which is turned up. Short ear flaps fitted with one press stud which enables them to be fastened back to cover a single, one inch round hole in side of helmet, or to be rolled forward to become wind deflectors leaving the hole clear. Short broad leather chin strap on right lined in fur and tapering to a point and fitted with two female press studs to engage variably with three male press studs below left ear. The helmet shows no signs of heavy wear. Condition - very good, slight split rear of crown and the fur on the chin strap needs slight re-stitching. Displayable and interesting.

Brown leather holster open at both ends. On rear 2 narrow straps with buckles and retainers to fasten to waist belt. Tab and buckle extending above top edge to attach to shoulder brace. Narrow strap with hole and slot rivetted on rear and extends across mouth to engage with brass stud on front to retain weapon. Cleaning rod tube with wire/bristle brush.

A gold Maltese cross, with ball finials, enamelled crimson. Between each arm a gold double-headed eagle, the bifurcated end of each arm decorated with a gold segmented semi-circular loop, the upper one bearing a suspension ball and ring. The eagles overlaid on the obverse with crossed gold swords overall. Centrally within a green enamelled laurel wreath a white medallion bearing two intertwined crimson Ss. The reverse of the cross as the obverse. Sash - red with white, red, white edges. NO RIBBON.

Broad brown leather belt, with double pin, brass buckle, fitted with three brass D rings on its upper edge and two angular brass loops on its lower edge. To the left of the buckle is a running leather loop, a flat brass hook and a fixed, long-neck stud which engages in holes pierced in the right end. Metal work secured by decorative stitching and brass rivets. Behind the buckle is a flaired leather piece to protect the uniform fabric.

Narrow, brown leather strap fitted with a brass stud and pierced leather tab at its rear end and shaped to a pierced point at its forward end. Attached to this end a short strap with single pin brass buckle at one end and a brass stud and pierced leather tab at the other. The strap fitted with two leather loops, one fixed and one running.
