Order of the British Empire, Dame Commander, Military, Badge
The Order of the British Empire is an order of chivalry awarded to individuals for outstanding contributions to public service. Dame Joanna Cruickshank received the Dame Commander class of the OBE in 1931.
The Order was instituted in 1917 by King George V to reflect the non-combatant service of British and Commonwealth citizens during the First World War. As a Dame Commander of the Order, Joanna Cruickshank was entitled to wear both this badge, worn around the neck on a ribbon, and a silver star, worn on the left breast of her cloak.
