P.R.4 biographical file on Wg Cdr Lionel Cohen, 1944
Wing Commander Lionel Cohen was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross in 1944 for his “untiring energy and courage” on active operations.
Known as ‘Sos’, Cohen was born to an Anglo-Jewish family in 1875. This excerpt from an Air Ministry public relations file details his distinguished military career of more than 50 years’ service. While appointed air liaison officer to the Royal Navy, Sos volunteered for Coastal Command to gain operational experience. In total, he flew over 45 missions targeting U-boats and enemy shipping.
