Large group photograph of personnel of No. 80 Squadron, Egypt, 8 February 1940
No. 80 Squadron had reformed at RAF Kenley in March 1937 and after re-equipping with Gloster Gladiators were posted to Egypt in April 1938.
Notable among the personnel pictured is Pat Pattle, seated in the front row 10th from the left. Pattle a South African had joined the RAF on a short service commission after being rejected by the South Africa Air Force. He was to become one of the highest scoring British Commonwealth pilots of the Second World War and the highest scoring Gladiator pilot.
