Information booklet for British troops in occupied Germany, circa 1945
This booklet provides an overview of German language, history and culture. It was issued to British personnel serving in Allied occupation forces in Germany, following its surrender in May 1945.
The guidance further establishes a strict code of behaviour for how troops should engage with civilians. Its commentary on so-called "atrocity propaganda", warns against displaying "softness and sentimentality", insisting that all Germans must share some responsibility for the Nazi regime. Personnel were told to be courteous and respectful, but any form of romantic involvement was firmly discouraged. Despite these warnings, thousands of marriages between British troops and German women ultimately took place. From the Papers of Flt Lt Martin Rickers (AC97/14).
