Panel from Lancaster 'N' for 'Nan'
From its earliest days, RAF personnel used artwork on aircraft to boost morale. During the Second World War nose art became increasingly flamboyant.
On 28 October 1944, Lancaster III, ED860, ‘N’ for ‘Nan’ of No. 61 Squadron, swung off the runway during take off at RAF Skellingthorpe and was written off, thankfully without injury to the crew. Until then, ED 860 had been the most successful Lancaster to serve in Bomber Command. This panel commemorates its 130 operations.
