Flight Lieutenant Robbie Stewart was a Tornado navigator during the Gulf War 1990-1991, where he and his pilot Flt Lt Dave Waddington were shot down and captured.

Stewart and Waddington were shot down by a surface-to-air missile during a low-level night attack against Tallil Air Base, Iraq. They were captured by Iraqi forces and badly beaten during their interrogation and six-week imprisonment. This sculpture bust was made in 1992 when Stewart served at the Tri-National Tornado Training Establishment after his return from captivity. To form an impression of the figure in uniform, artist Keith Maddison posed and photographed a student in flying clothing. Working from photographs of Stewart, Maddison then developed the bust in his likeness. Purchased in 1992. Copyright: Keith Maddison.
