View of the Blitz by Mary Viola Paterson, etching
This etching is an original impression, printed and signed by 'Viola Paterson'. Later impressions, or ‘re-strikes’, were posthumously printed in 1983 by Yvonne Drewry in a folio edition of 150.
A painter, pastelist and printmaker, Paterson, who had trained at the Slade School of Fine Art and in Parisian ateliers, came from an influential family of artists in Glasgow. During the Second World War Paterson lived in Oxford, working for the Admiralty. Although the location of this Blitz scene has yet to be determined, the industrial and tenement buildings are believed to be those of Glasgow, possibly Clydebank, which had been bombed in March 1941.
