Observer's and pilot's flying log book of Captain Bertine Entwisle Sutton, 1915-1917
Flying log book of Captain Bertine Sutton, recording flights while an observer on No.5 Squadron over Ypres November 1915-April 1916 and as a pilot with No.9 Squadron June 1917-September 1917.
No.5 and No.9 were reconnaissance squadrons, much of their work involved artillery co-operation, observing fall of artillery shells and reporting back adjustments to the artillery batteries for which they were observing. In July 1916 Sutton and his pilot were both awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry when conducting low altitude reconnaissances. during which the pilot was wounded and the aircraft crashed, sadly this event is not recorded in this log book. Sutton would remain in the RAF after the war and achieved high rank, retiring in 1945 as an Air Marshal.
