The Strait of Hormuz between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman provides the only sea passage from the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea in the Indian Ocean. Highlighted on the Trucial Coast is Sharjah which is now an Emirate of the United Arab Emirates. In 1932 Imperial Airways established a regular air service which included overnight stops at Sharjah, and the airfield later became RAF Sharjah
