USAAF Shoulder Badge, 8th Air Force
While Bomber Command operated mainly at night, the US 8th Air Force conducted daylight raids against Germany and occupied Europe. By 1945, the 8th equalled Bomber Command in the tonnage of bombs dropped.
The badge incorporates the wings and star emblem of the USAAF but turns the circular motif in the centre into the number 8. The badge would have been worn on the left shoulder of dress uniforms or shirts in the position which would otherwise be used for the generic USAAF badge. The 8th was tasked with carrying out United States part of the combined Strategic Bombing campaign against Germany flying from bases in the UK.
