USAAF Shoulder Badge, 9th Air Force
The 9th was the US’s tactical air force for the invasion of Europe. By autumn 1944 most units had relocated to the continent, serving beside the RAF’s 2nd Tactical Air Force.
The badge incorporates the wings and star emblem of the USAAF but replaces the star in circular motif in the centre with the number 9. The badge would have been worn on the left shoulder of dress uniforms or shirts in the position which would otherwise be used for the generic USAAF badge
