The Fleet Air Arm of the RAF was formed on 1 April 1924. It operated aircraft from carriers and warships alongside Royal Naval personnel. Telegraphist Air Gunners manned the rear gun of FAA aircraft and provided morse code communications.
The Fleet Air Arm was formed in 1924 as a distinct branch of the RAF, incorporating the airborne units usually embarked on Royal Navy ships. Its crews and personnel were members of the RAF but worked alongside their Royal Naval colleagues. FAA aircraft used as reconnaissance and torpedo bombers usually carried additional crew to the pilot, and telegraphist air gunners operated the wireless and rear gun. The FAA was transferred to the control of the Royal Navy in 1939, as part of pre-War rearmament and reorganisation
