Pathfinder Force badge of Wing Commander Raymond Hilton
Pathfinder crews identified and marked targets for the main bomber stream of aircraft. These crews underwent additional training and were expected to complete one Tour of 45 operations. A qualified Pathfinder was allowed to wear the coveted eagle badge over his left breast pocket.
‘Ray’ Hilton was the pilot of our Lancaster R5868 on the first of its 137 operations, to Wilhelmshaven on 8 July 1942. Ray captained the aircraft on a further 17 operations, with No. 83 Squadron Pathfinder Force. After two tours with No. 83 Squadron Ray returned as its Commanding Officer, but was subsequently killed on operations in November 1943.
