GEE Receiver Type R1355
GEE was a radio navigation aid with few components, enabling it to be fitted easily to most aircraft requiring a navigator. It acquired a reputation of being simple to operate and gained the nickname ‘the goon box’ as anybody could use it.
The GEE radio navigation aid enabled navigators to locate their aircraft’s position by comparing the time differences between pulses transmitted from a ‘master’ station and those repeated by two substations. Its widespread introduction to Bomber Command from March 1942 improved navigation so that large numbers of aircraft could attack the same target in a short period of time. GEE was soon jammed by the Germans over occupied territory but was still useful in setting aircraft on the right track and helped them get home safely.
