Air Gunner's Flying Badge, Service Dress, 1939 Pattern

In 1939 Air Gunners became the first aircrew trade to receive a new style of flying badge. This single winged brevet mirrored the style of the earlier Observer’s badge.

The Air Gunners brevet, displaying the initials of the trade surrounded by a laurel wreath, served as the prototype for the flying badges of all other trades other than pilots. The original design had 13 flight feathers, however, this was thought to be unlucky so the design was changed to display only 12.
