Heliograph
A heliograph can be used to send morse coded messages using a mirror to reflect flashes of sunlight. They were carried in survival kits on board RAF aircraft in the 1930s.
This heliograph was carried by RAF pilot Henry Hogan during his flights with the Long Range Development Unit (LRDU). In November 1938 they carried out a non-stop 48-hour flight between Ismailia in Egypt and Darwin in Australia. The heliograph would have been used to signal a request for help in the event of a forced landing
