Fédération Aéronatique Internationale Medallion, England to Australia Record Flight, 1938
Fédération Aéronatique Internationale Medallion awarded to Flight Lieutenant Henry Hogan, pilot of one of three Vickers Wellesley bombers which took part in an attempt to establish a non-stop world record flight from Egypt to Australia in 1938
The RAF selected the Vickers Wellesley for long-range flight trials, creating the Long Range Development Unit at Upper Heyford, in January 1938. The three aircraft flew from Ismailia, Egypt for a non-stop 48 hour flight to Darwin, Australia. Two aircraft completed the flight, a record breaking distance of 7,158 miles. However, Hogan's aircraft landed short of Darwin in West Timor.
