In addition to her rank and wireless operator's trade badges, Flight Sergeant Avis Hearn's Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) tunic also carries the ribbon of the Military Medal.
Throughout the devastating German dive bomber attack on the RAF radar station at Poling, at the height of the Battle of Britain, Acting Corporal Avis Hearn, a WAAF radar operator, continued to monitor her radar receiver and relay information to HQ Fighter Command. For her selfless bravery, she was awarded the Military Medal, one of only six awarded to WAAFs during the Second World War.
