RAF, Type G.28 Camera Gun
Gun cameras could be used to record combat or, in the case of this G.28 ‘Lewis’ type gun camera, used to train air gunners in the vital skill of sighting their weapon against a moving target.
The G.28 resembled a First World War era Lewis machine gun and functioned in much the same way. The dummy weapon housed a lens and camera with a detachable magazine. To take a picture the observer needed to cock the action, align the ring and bead sight and pull the trigger. The resulting photograph revealed if the gunner was aiming the weapon appropriately.
