Message Dropping Streamer

Before radio communication became available in military aviation, messages from aircraft to troops on the ground would be handwritten and dropped in a message bag.

This type of streamer was attached to the message bag to create drag and thus reduce the speed of the message bag as it fell to the ground for retrieval. It also acted as a colourful visual aid to locating the message bag.
