Rabbit's Foot lucky charm
Carrying a rabbit’s foot as a good luck charm is a tradition in many countries, although it is not very lucky for the rabbit! This rabbit’s foot was carried by flight engineer John Murrell during his successful escape from prison camp Stalag 357 at Fallingbostel in 1945.
Aircrew find support during their service in different ways. Faith and prayer can offer comfort. Sometimes lucky charms or mascots are used try to ward off bad luck and maintain morale. These can be traditional – like a black cat or rabbit’s foot – or just everyday objects with a special meaning to the individual.
