Berlin Airlift, One Millionth Ton
This banner was displayed by the crew of an RAF Avro York transport aircraft, which flew the Berlin Airlift's millionth ton of supplies to the city on 18 February 1949.
From June 1948 to May 1949 West Berlin was blockaded by Soviet forces. Essential supplies were flown in to the city by the US Air Force and the RAF. The Berlin Airlift became increasingly effective and efficient, and on 18 February 1949 the airlift’s millionth ton of supplies was delivered by an RAF Avro York of 59 Squadron. This banner was displayed by the crew after their arrival.
