German Naval Air Service Incendiary Bomb (Mark Unknown)
Standard First World War German incendiary bomb, as dropped from airships. Suspension loop at top. Circular, domed bottom corroded/burnt away. Wrapped with rope, which would originally be tar soaked. Rusty surface.
German airship raids over Britain, dropping bombs such as this, killed 557 people - 181 of them in London - and injured another 1,358, 504 of them in London. The interior of these bombs was filled with a mixture of Benzol, tar, and thermite, which burned at an extremely high temperature, easily igniting wood and combustible materials. The coiled rope would be soaked in tar to aid ignition.
