Würzburg Radar Indicator Unit
German air defence relied heavily on radar. Early warning was provided by the Freya radar system while Würzburg Radars were used for ground-controlled interception. This unit was used to direct searchlights and flak guns.
The air defence of Germany originally centred around search lights and flak. Form late 1940 these started to receive Würzburg Radars. By early 1941 night fighters were being added. These didn’t have radar but were guided by the Würzburg Radars and used the glow from the searchlights to visually acquire their target. The German air defence system became increasingly reliant on Radar with their night fighting system centred around radar guided ground control and radar equipped night fighters.
