Extract from interrogation notes of FM Gerd von Runstedt with regard to air action during "Overlord", circa 1945
This is an extract from the interrogation of Field Marshal Von Rundstedt. In charge of the German Forces during the D-Day Landings, he recalls the operational difficulties they experienced first-hand.
Despite inflicting high casualties on the allies, German forces were ill-equipped and disorganised during D-Day. Despite his best efforts Von Rundstedt was unable to stop the Allied forces from advancing. He was subsequently dismissed by Hitler and captured by the allies in 1945. The extract, which was taken during Von Rundstedt’s interrogation, highlights the issues his forces faced during D-Day. Information gathered from interrogations was useful when investigating potential war crimes.
