Baron Richthofen Commemorative Medallion
Circular, matt silver with; Obverse - uniformed three-quarters facing bust of Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen, encircled by RITTMEISTER MANFRED FRHR V RICHTHOFEN. Reverse - next to a gravestone, decorated with a knight's helmet with crest and mantling and a coat of arms and bearing the date 12 APRIL 1918, a standing eagle, its head raised in salute with the number 89 pierced by an arrow. Encircled by the words DER ROTE KAMPF FLIEGER. Signed by the artist at the base of gravestone.
The date of death on the headstone (12 April) and the kill figure (89) are mistakes by the artist Karl Goetz in 1918, making this example a rarity.
