No. 604 Squadron was formed at RAF Hendon in 1930 in the Auxiliary Air Force. All of the Auxiliary Air Force squadrons were embodied in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War.
No. 604 Squadron Auxiliary Air Force was reformed at Hendon in 1946. In 1947 the Auxiliary Air Force was granted the title Royal Auxiliary Air Force by King George VI. In 1949 the squadron moved to RAF North Weald and re-equipped with De Havilland Vampire aircraft. In 1952 it was re-equipped with the Gloster Meteor F Mk 8 aircraft, shown here, which it retained until disbanded in 1957.
