Norden Bombsight Type M9
The US Army Air Force strategy for bombing Germany centred around the use of this highly accurate Norden Bombsight to conduct precision attacks on vital industries during daylight. Unfortunately, the cloudy European weather frequently obscured targets and reduced accuracy.
The Norden Bombsight is a tachometric sight where the target is constantly viewed through the periscope of the sight and calculations are made using the sight on how to guid the aircraft to that spot. The calculations are made by adjusting the controls of the sight so that the cross hairs of sight remain over the target. Once the cross hairs are stationary on the target, the sight will guide the aircraft to the release point and drop the bombs automatically.
