Signaller's Flying Badge, Service Dress, 1943 Pattern
Introduced as a separate aircrew badge under Air Ministry Order A 1019/43, Signallers operated the wireless set and, in some aircraft, monitored Radar equipment.
The role of Signaller grew out of the role of Wireless Operator. Originally Wireless Operators also qualified as Air Gunners and wore the gunner’s flying badge. With aircraft becoming larger and roles becoming more specialised, many Wireless Operators didn’t require the air gunnery training, leaving these Wireless Operator (Air) without a flying qualification badge. This was addressed in late 1943 with the announcement of the Signaller's Badge although it was 1944 before it was issued.
