Medal Bar of Squadron Leader Wilfred Edward Jones
Wilfred Edward Jones joined the RAF as an Apprentice in 1931. Jones served until 1961 when he died whilst serving as a Squadron Leader in the Assistant Chief of Air Staff's Intelligence staff. Jones was Mentioned in Despatches in the London Gazette in 1945
Jones joined the RAF as an Apprentice at No. 1 School of Technical Training at Halton on 1 September 1931 at the age of 17 on a twelve year engagement. Jones was promoted Leading Aircraftman in 1934. Jones then volunteered as an Air Observer and after training was posted to No. 63 Squadron and then to No. 12 Squadron in 1939. He served with the unit throughout the Battle of France and its reconstruction thereafter, undertook an engine course at Rolls Royce in May 1941 and continued with the unit until discharged to a commission in February 1943. By this date he was a Temporary Flight Sergeant In 1952, Jones was loaned to the Royal Pakistan Air Force for two years.
