Other Rank, 1918 Pattern, Women's Royal Air Force Cap Badge
This is the cap badge worn by members of the WRAF in 1918. It was superseded in 1920 by Air Ministry Weekly Order 545, which introduced a metal cap badge.
Cut from Melton wool and padded black velvet, the 1918 pattern cap badge bears an RAF eagle, twice ringed, capped with the King’s Crown, and is worked entirely in white thread. This derived from the regular RAF Other Ranks cap badge which employed red thread and had a roped surround. WRAF work was broadly divided into Clerks and Storewomen, Household, Technical, and Non-Technical roles, and by 1920, its women had served in over 50 trades.
