German One Mark Banknote
RAF officers in German prisoner of war camps in 1918 were able to cash cheques and purchase items from their German captors. This note was brought back from Bayreuth prisoner camp by former prisoner of war Lieutenant Wilfred Harry Pollard.
Pollard was a pilot with No. 21 Squadron flying a reconnaissance sortie in RE8 aircraft number C2407 when he was shot down and badly injured by anti-aircraft fire over France on 16 August 1918. His observer, Lieutenant Kenneth Macdonald, was killed and, as his body has never been found, he is commemorated on the Arras Flying Services Memorial.
