Flight Lieutenant Learoyd VC
Flight Lieutenant Roderick Learoyd describes a low-level night bombing raid on an aqueduct carrying the Dortmund-Ems Canal on 12 August 1940. For this action Learoyd was awarded the Victoria Cross.
Flight Lieutenant Learoyd of 49 Squadron explains how, with crews of 83 Squadron, he was briefed for an attack on an aqueduct carrying the Dortmund-Ems Canal over the river Ems. He describes the attack, during which his Hampden was hit and damaged by anti-aircraft fire, and goes on to explain how, rather than attempt a night landing with serious damage, he remained airborne near RAF Scampton before landing at dawn.
