Sergeant Pilot Ward VC
Recording in which Sergeant James Ward of 75 Squadron, second pilot in a Wellington bomber, describes his actions of 7 July 1941, for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
Sergeant James Ward of 75 Squadron explains how, while returning from a raid on Munster, his Wellington bomber was attacked and damaged by a Messerschmitt 110 fighter. He goes on to tell how he climbed out of the aircraft onto the starboard wing and attempted to extinguish a fire in the starboard engine before re-entering the aeroplane. He concludes his account by describing a landing on an airfield in England.
