Squadron Leader Widdowson talking on the gallantry that won Sergeant Ward the VC
Squadron Leader Widdowson, pilot of a 75 Squadron Wellington, explains how his second pilot, Sergeant James Ward on 7 July 1941 came to be awarded the Victoria Cross.
Squadron Leader Widdowson gives a brief account of a raid on Munster before describing the damage caused by a Messerschmitt 110 night fighter. He then explains how Sergeant Ward climbed out onto the Wellington's wing and extinguished a fire in the starboard engine before re-entering the aeroplane. Squadron Leader Widdowson also gives his opinions on Sergeant Ward's actions.
