Bomber evasion tactics, Spitfire versus Stirling
Film in which animated diagrams and film taken from the perspectives of a fighter pilot and bomber’s gunner show how a bomber aircraft can manoeuvre to avoid a fighter attack.
Animated diagrams illustrate fighter attacks on a bomber aircraft and the bomber’s evasive manoeuvres. A Short Stirling bomber aircraft is seen in a fighter aircraft’s gun camera footage from various angles. A Spitfire fighter aircraft is seen attacking from the perspective of a bomber’s gunner and a Stirling is seen from a fighter pilot’s perspective during attacks. The bomber’s use of the evasive ‘corkscrew’ manoeuvre is also explained and illustrated.
