Target folder, operation number GO. 1237, Knapsack, 1941-1944
Target information folder prepared by the Air Ministry Target Section, giving details of the thermal electric power station of the Rheinisch-West-Fälisches Elektrikzitatswerk A.G. at Knapsack 7 miles south west of Cologne.
The power stations at Knapsack and the nearby one at Quadrath were notably attacked during a daylight raid on 12th August 1941. 38 Bristol Blenheims were dispatched to bomb Knapsack each carrying two 500lbs. The aircraft approached at low-level and reported accurate bombing. Seven of the 38 Blenheims were shot down. Two Distinguished Service Orders, 10 Distinguished Flying Crosses and three Distinguished Flying Medals to aircrews who participated in these raids. The power station at Knapsack was attacked on three further occasion in late 1943 by small numbers of De Havilland Mosquitos.
